Tasawwuf Terms Abridged

‘Arif (عارف): Knower of Allah @ a person blessed with ma’rifah
Aurad (أوراد): Plural for wirid @ a compilation of zikr and wirid
Bai’ah (بيعة): A promise between murid and shaykh to obey Allah and Rasul
Baqa’ (بقاء): Outwardly, constantly practice noble manners. Inwardly, always remain with Allah
Fana’ (فناء): Outwardly lost all bad manners. Inwardly, lost consciousness and all human traits.
Ghaflah (غفلة): Heedless from remembering Allah
Hal (حال): Inner side or spiritual condition experienced by murid as a bless from Allah like ikhlas (sincerity in worship)
Hijab (حجاب): Spiritual obstruction
Himmah (همة): Determination
Jazbah (جذبة): Spiritual attraction toward Allah
Kasyf (كشف): Revelation of unseen elements
Khalwat/ ‘Uzlah (خلوة/ عزلة): Solitary, to perform zikr (remembrance of Allah) and to get close with Him
Khidmah (خدمة): Serve the shaykh
Ma’rifah (معرفة): The knowledge about Allah, obtained spiritually by chosen Sufis.
Maqam (مقام): A stage or condition experienced by a murid as a result from his effort (mujahadah) like taubat (repentance)
Mujahadah (مجاهدة): An effort to control the nafs (self)
Muraqabah (مراقبة): Aware that Allah is always observing
Murid/ Salik/ Sa-ir (مريد/ سالك/ سائر)- The names or terms to a person who initiate into tariqah under the guidance of a shaykh
Musyahadah (مشاهدة): Witnessing the Greatness of Allah with heart (spiritually)
Shaykh/ Mursyid (شيخ/ مرشد): A leader/ guider in tariqah
Suhbah (صحبة): To company with a shaykh
Tahalli (تحلي): Attribute oneself with noble traits
Tajalli (تجلي): Witnessing Allah with heart
Takhalli (تخلي): Clean oneself from bad traits
Tariqah (طريقة): A special way/ methods to obtain the blessing of Allah @ tasawwuf institution led by a shaykh
Tazkiyyah (تزكية): Purification (of heart)
Zuhd (زهد): Putting the world only in the hand grasp not in the heart. (Worldly matters do not corrupt one’s heart)
